Royal Rebel and IT Girl

Long before Diana and Kate made headlines for their impeccable dress sense, Princess Margaret, sister of the Queen and youngest daughter of King George VI, dominated British newspaper headlines for more than her fashionable dress sense.

The press and the general public were obsessed about what ever Princess Margaret wore, did, whom she mixed with and the men she dated.

Princess Margaret loved breaking all the royal rules. She was free spirited, party loving and couture clad. This princess was the Black Sheep of the English royal family.

Princess Margaret was regarded as more than an English rose. She was a ravishing beauty who loved beautiful clothes and good looking men on her arm.

The princess particularly adored the Parisian based designer Christian Dior and his couture creations. Dior was an anglophile and loved Princess Margaret and was ecstatic to dress her. Princess Margaret championed Dior and ordered many pieces from him and also changed how other English society woman perceived Dior’s New Look.

Dior presented his latest haute couture collections in England three times. Dior’s New Look was initially shown at the Savoy in 1947 and in 1954 and 1958 the magnificent ancestral home of the Duke of Marlborough, Blenheim Palace, provided the backdrop to Dior’s breath taking creations.

Dior designed the magnificent white full skirt ball gown Princess Margaret wore at her 21st birthday party. For years after she said it was her favourite dress of all time.

For many years after her 21st, Margaret was Dior’s poster girl and unapologetically whipped the nation into a fashion frenzy!!
